Athlete of the Week: Varsity Dance

By Camille Lyon Posted September 10, 2009

For this week, the whole varsity dance team is the Athlete of the Week. They entertain the crowd during halftime, and just dancing for two minutes may not seem worth it, but to this team, it means everything they have worked for. The varsity dance team captains are seniors Camille Lyon, and Rachael Studebaker. The team is coached by Jane Studebaker and Leticia Delaney.

“We try to make those two minutes of half-time count,” said Rachael Studebaker.

The dance team tries out in May and goes until February. The dance team goes on for both the fall and winter seasons. The team acquires all of their dances through a summer camp program where professional dancers come from Louisiana to teach dances. The dance team also choreographs their dances. The summer camp is very rigorous and tiring. Many girls have experienced opportunities through dance team.

Every year some members of the team are chosen to travel and perform as a part of the American All-star National Dance Team. This year’s destination was Madrid, Spain.

In the past, the team has been able to travel to Hawaii, Italy, France, and the Caribbean.

Dance team is truly a sport for dedication. The girls have to practice every school day for two seasons, both fall and winter.

The dance team has also won awards. In 2007, the Varsity dance team won runner-up in 3A jazz at the Silver State Spirit Competition.
