Anthony Peterson was chosen as boys Athlete of the Year. He is a wrestling state champion. Although sadly his high school wrestling career was cut short when wrestling was canceled for his senior year. Needless to say, he is a very talented wrestler winning a state title as a junior. And he is a beast on the football field, he made varsity all four years, playing at running back and outside linebacker.

He has been playing sports since a young age. And he has always been good at whatever sport he chooses to do. He says he was always very competitive, and liked football and wrestling over other sports.

“I was inspired to play football and wrestling over other sports because I loved to play them when I was younger,” said Peterson.

Peterson is a leader and a role model to younger athletes. And he was always pushed by his brother.

“My role models would have to be my brother, Joe, and my mom, Theresa,” said Peterson. “Growing up my brother and I would always compete and sometimes it would turn into a UFC fight. I looked up to him because he was hardworking and a lot bigger.”

Anthony has always pushed himself to outwork the competition which has made him the athlete that he is today.
“I have went through a lot of adversity throughout my sporting career,” said Peterson. “I have learned to trust myself and I know that hard work pays off.”

Peterson explains that the road to success is not easy, and it took lots of hard work to become a state champion. His wrestling coach and a teacher at the Winnemucca Junior High School Mr. John Brooks has helped him to become an elite wrestler.

“Mr. [John] Brooks brought in many talented alumni that would share their skills with me,” said Peterson. “I got beat by them every single day but it only made me better.”

Throughout his high school sports career, Peterson feels he has learned a lot.

“I have learned to be disciplined and to be grateful for the opportunities that are given to me,” said Peterson.

Peterson would want to tell an athlete just starting at a sport, “Stick with it even if they don’t catch on right away.”

Peterson has recently signed with Eastern Oregon University for football. They offered him a scholarship and will be getting a bachelor’s degree in exercise science.
