Athletes who made an impact as Buckaroos

COVID has impacted a lot. There was no school, people were online, family and friends were lost. It’s been one big roller coaster ride. In a year like no other, there is never enough time or space to highlight all of the deserving athletes.

Sam Roth has played three sports all through high school. He has played football, basketball and track, and field. Keeping up with three sports as well as all the school work that teachers give out isn’t a simple task. One does it for the love of the sports they play.

Roth had a hard time during conditions with the masks but overall had a great time playing his final year.

“Having to wear a mask during conditioning was hard and so was not having the full capacity for fans,” said Roth. “Playing in front of fans just gives you a lot more energy.”

Roth wasn’t able to play basketball. He did get to partake in both football and track, however.
Roth is grateful to sports for allowing him to learn a few things.

“Sports are a great way to learn about work ethic and make friends,” said Roth.

Christian Cuevas has been playing soccer for four years. Cuevas got a chance to play all of his seasons but this doesn’t mean that it hasn’t been difficult for him.

“The most difficult part of having to play through the pandemic was definitely getting everybody ready to play and wearing the mask at practice for a little but overall it wasn’t that bad,” said Cuevas.

Not only did Cuevas have some difficulty playing the sport he loved but the last of the season meant the last of his high school memories while playing on the team.

“This is a very tough question because, through my high school years playing soccer, there have been so many great memories that I’ve made with the team,” said Cuevas. “I will definitely remember this recent season and the championship game. We might have lost but I won’t forget the feeling I got when I scored the first goal and that was probably the hardest I’ve ever played.”

Lesley Martinez is also one that’s not shy about the world of sports. She has played basketball, soccer and track and field, she ultimately ended up just sticking with soccer and track.

To Martinez, the most difficult thing about playing sports is learning how to manage time. Life is supposed to be a balance but sometimes with school, this wasn’t always an option for Martinez.

“Keeping up with schoolwork was probably the hardest thing because it seemed like I never had time for anything,” said Martinez. “I dealt with it by managing my time in a wiser manner and by prioritizing school and my sports above anything else,”

Lauren Fentress has also played her fair share of sports. She has played volleyball, basketball, softball, soccer, and cheer.

“I have played a total of five sports at Lowry throughout my high school career,” said Fentress. “My favorite sport I played at lowry was probably volleyball my freshman year, I have all my friends on the team, and I enjoyed hitting and improving with my team. I also enjoyed being a part of cheer my senior year and working with my team. I loved learning new cheers and cheering at the games. Besides sports, I enjoy working and hanging out with my friends.”
