Girl’s freshman basketball defeats Dayton in a narrow win

On February 13, girl’s freshman Basketball defeated the Dayton Dust Devils by one point. The Bucks held a solid lead until the fourth quarter when Dayton made a run that almost resulted in a loss for Lowry.

The game started with Dayton winning the tip and scoring their first points off a lay-up twenty seconds later. However, Lowry wasted no time in making a comeback, starting with Jordan Mecham scoring two points off free throws. Teishina Muething then took the ball down the court to sink a short-range shot bringing the score to 4-2.

Yoana Chavez then brought the score to 5-4 off a free throw and Sydney Blankenship added a short-range shot to bring the score to 7-4. Eva Mercado sunk a jump shot and Dayton succeeded in scoring once more before the quarter ended 9-6.

Lowry came out on fire in the second quarter starting with Rikki Hamilton making a short-range shot. Irma Fernandez then made one of her two free throws to bring the score to 12-6. Mercado sunk another jump shot and Mecham made a free throw leaving the score at 15-6.

A series of fouls resulted in two points for Dayton but the Dust Devils failed to keep up with Lowry’s scoring. Mercado came back with a lay-up and Arielle Sandoval with a short-range shot. Blankenship added the last point of the quarter off a free throw and the Bucks went into the half leading 19-9.

In the second half, Lowry struggled to hold on to the lead as Dayton came out strong and ready to play. The Dust Devils scored four points off two consecutive lay-ups and had 10 points for the overall quarter. Whereas Lowry had only half that much scoring only 5 points and went into the fourth quarter with the slim lead of 24-21.

Though at first, the Bucks looked like they were regaining their larger lead, Dayton came back to score eight points tying the game at 29-29. It eventually came down to one point, a free throw sunk by Lowry’s Blankenship. Winning 30-29 the Lowry Girls Freshman team finished out their season.

Mercado led the team with six points, Blankenship and Muething had five each, Mecham had four, Hamilton three, followed by Fernandez, Sandoval, and Chavez, with two each.
