As announced in a press release from Nevada Governor Jim Gibbons on September 20, high school senior Zhan Okuda-Lim has been appointed to the Education Reform Blue Ribbon Task Force. Okuda-Lim has been involved in student government since his freshman year. For three years he was Class President, and this year he is Student Body President.

Okuda-Lim also has experience advocating for education and has testified before Nevada Legislature in the past. He asked state leaders to maintain adequate funding for public education. In the release, Governor Gibbons said he is certain that Zhan’s experience will be a benefit to all the members of the Education Reform Task Force as they lay the framework for the intellectual infrastructure of Nevada’s future.

“Zhan has seized the opportunities offered by Nevada’s public education system and has first-hand familiarity with what works and what might need improvement in the classroom,” Governor Gibbons said.

In the press release, it was said that the Task Force has accomplished some momentous education reform milestones, including:

“A collaboration of a diverse group of stakeholders united with a common goal.

The creation of a blueprint for education reform, Nevada’s Promise—a pledge to achieve significant, positive, and transformative changes for education in Nevada.

Progress in changing the way we do business in education.”
