After defeating the Sparks Railroaders on Friday, February 6, girl’s varsity basketball continued their winning streak by trouncing the Fernley Vaqueros the following Saturday. The game started with the Vaqueros winning the tip, however, Lowry made its first point within two minutes off a free throw sunk by Darrian Black.

Rachelle Dennis then took the ball down the court and made a jump shot from the elbow. Fernley scored their first point off a free throw but could not keep up with Lowry’s fast-paced scoring. Dennis added a lay-up and another jump shot, Skylar Estes also added a jump shot, and Julia Dufurrena added two points off free throws, all before going into the second quarter.

The second quarter started with Lowry leading of 15-3 and Emelia Legarza soon increased the lead to 14 after making a lay-up. Estes then brought the score to 20-3 after making a lay-up and free throw. Fernley then added their only points of the quarter off of two consecutive lay-ups. Lowry responded with a shooting spree starting with Ashlee Lee sinking a field goal. Dennis then made another jump shot from the elbow and sunk a field goal of her own. Lee shot another field goal with one second left and the half ended with Dufurrena making a jump shot. The Bucks went into the half with the score at 32-7.

The third quarter started off slow and both teams saw numerous turnovers. Lowry succeeded in scoring 10 points during the quarter while Fernley brought in only four, making the score 42-11. Fernley managed to double their score in the fourth quarter, however, this was nothing compared to Lowry’s 26 points and the game ended with a score of 56-21.

Rachelle Dennis led the Bucks with 16 points, Estes followed with 14, Dufurrena with six, Courtney Hammond with five, Legarza added three, and Lee, Angie Herrera, Black, and Jenae Neu had two each. The Lady Bucks will next face the Yerrington Lions and Dayton Dust Devils on February 12 and 13 respectively.
