On January 8, Lowry boy’s varsity basketball team took on the Truckee at home. The Buckaroos started the game off with David Eastman, Anders Pace, Joel Mendoza, Will Thacker, and Danny Westfall.

Although the Wolverines won the tip the Bucks proceeded to take the ball back across the court with Westfall scoring a 3-point baseline shot.

“We made six [3-point shots] in the first half,” said junior Grant Miller. This got the Bucks off to a good start.

Lowry kept Truckee scoreless until the last two minutes of the quarter when were 2 for 4 on free throws. The first quarter ended 16-2 Lowry.

The Bucks carried the intensity into the second quarter. Lowry kept Truckee to just 10 points in the second quarter making the score at half 33-12.

“The whole first half was shooting threes and getting steals. We were working hard,” said junior Will Thacker.

When the halftime activities had finished, the game came back with the Wolverine exploding in the first four minutes by scoring seven points to the Bucks’ two.

“Our second half was pretty crappy we didn’t have much intensity like we did in the first half,” said Thacker.

In the next four minutes, Lowry answered back with seven more points but Truckee still won the quarter 11-9. Making the running totals Lowry 41 and Truckee 25.

The fourth quarter was an unforgettable one. The quarter ran with foul after foul. The fourth quarter ended with Lowry gaining 21 points and Truckee getting 28 points. The last push by both teams sent the final score to 62-53. The boys then joined in the tradition of walking over and listening to Lowry’s pep band play the school song. The boys said they will be working on a few things to conclude the week.

“We are just going to keep working hard the whole game and not take a half off we got to work for it [the win],” said Thacker, to fix it “We are going to start coming closer, everybody is going to push each other at practices and keep each other up in games.”

The team’s mental status is going to be a factor.

“We’ve got to figure out how to pull our heads up and look past it [mistakes] and keep going,” said Miller.

The players’ mental state will take effect in the next few games to come. They play again for a set of games this weekend Jan15-16 against Sparks and Fernley.
