Movie Review: ‘True Grit’

Westerns are great movies and “True Grit” puts a new look to the western genre. The feel you get after experiencing this movie is phenomenal. It is a story of a stubborn young girl (Mattie Ross) that hires a U.S. Marshal (Rooster Cogburn) to kill a murderer named Tom Chaney for killing her father for two California gold pieces. Also along for the ride is Texas Ranger LaBoeuf.

The part that made me love this movie was at a house dug out of a hillside where two men are staying. Ross and Cogburn head inside only to see one man get his fingers cut off and stabbed in the heart. But Ross and Cogburn didn’t just stand there helpless, because Cogburn instantly pulled out his revolver and shot the man who stabbed the other in the head. It was all settled out and Cogburn asked the stabbed man a few questions before his death about the whereabouts of Chaney and he was successful.

The story draws you in at the beginning and makes you wonder what kind of man Tom Chaney is and why he killed Mr. Ross. The introduction of Cogburn gives the movie comic relief and a funny conflict between Mattie and him. The environment in True Grit gives the poor and harsh feel of early western life and makes you feel like shooting up some bad guys with a six-shooter.

This movie has a solid story and outstanding cast that any viewer would enjoy. You don’t have to be a fan of westerns to love this movie because it has everything. So go check it out, because everyone has got a cowboy somewhere inside that has to get out.
