Norcutt, Coach of the Year

Mrs. Norcutt is a track coach for Lowry. In the past, she has coached track and cross country. She chose to let another coach take over cross country, she helps occasionally with workouts and supports the athletes; but is mainly focused on coaching track.

Norcutt taught first grade for 25 years. Shortly after she started teaching she became a coach. She loves the sport.
“I’ve always been passionate about running and have wanted to share my love of the sport with young people,” said Norcutt.

She took a break from coaching for a while when she felt that she needed to help her son when he got involved with sports. She couldn’t stay away for long though.

“As soon as the opportunity arose for me to coach again I jumped at the chance to coach cross country,” said Norcutt. “Then a track position opened up and I took that on too in order to help develop a distance program at Lowry.”

Norcutt loves to see the athletes she has trained become successful and work to be the best version of themselves.

“It is the greatest compliment that a coach can receive when an athlete takes the information you’ve been teaching them and applies it successfully both on the track, or course and to life,” said Norcutt.

Lots of effort is put into cross country, and that’s one of Norcutt’s favorite parts. And when an athlete reaches one of their goals it is rewarding for her and that athlete.

“The greatest feeling as a coach is when I see an athlete accomplish some sort of goal that they’ve set for themself,” said Norcutt. “Not every athlete can be a state champion but every athlete can work towards something that’s just out of reach.”

The personal connections between a coach and an athlete can be a very good thing. She hears from her athletes after high school. When they have moved on with their life. When they are in college and have families of their own, she feels like that connection is special.

“I feel like they are a part of my family and I still keep in touch with many of the kids I’ve coached,” said Norcutt.
She considers it a good season when goals are met and athletes surprise themselves by doing something they thought was impossible.

“My focus or goal for myself and my athletes is to always strive for that personal improvement,” said Norcutt.
