Organizations around town spread holiday cheer to underprivileged kids

For many families around Winnemucca, the holidays are a stressful and depressing time. With many low-income families in and around Winnemucca, the problem of finances is a substantial one when it is time for the annual giving season. There are also many children who are part of these families.

There are many popular programs to give aid to these children in our community. One of these programs is Kidz-and-Copz. Kidz-and-Copz is a program run by the lieutenant of the local police department. All year-long money is raised so that in December local underprivileged children are able to go shopping at Wal-Mart for themselves, their friends, and their families. Many fundraisers are held throughout the year to help pay for the shopping spree that the children get to participate in, including a food stand at the local fair.

Another great program that helps underprivileged kids around Christmas time is The Kiwanis Angel Tree. Angel Trees can be found in numerous locations around town and are adorned with special ornaments for patrons of the bank or store to take. Written on the ornaments is information about a special child and what they want for Christmas. Many people in our community take place in this program and it has been successful.
