The Nerd Herd tramples the competition

The Lowry Academic Challenge team, also known as the Nerd Herd, has a standing record of 9-3, with team captain and top scorer Lainey Barta leading the way. Larry Storm is the team adviser and coach this year. They practice every Tuesday night for an hour and a half.

The practices that the Nerd Herd goes through include reading over old questions to get a feel for what they’re like, current events, how to hit the buzzers, and playing together as a team.

“It doesn’t matter what you know if you can’t play together,” Larry Storm said.

The main competition for Lowry is Spring Creek, which will be hosting the regional competition on February 28.

The team has only two possible weaknesses according to Storm.

“The knowledge is spread out pretty even, but if I had to say, probably art, or literature,” said Storm.

There really is no way to study for these competitions; Luis Gutierrez reads news articles every day to keep up with his current events.

“There’s no way to study, either you know it, or you don’t,” said Gutierrez.

The Nerd Herd will make its next appearance in Battle Mountain on February 14 to keep their high standing.
