What to Watch: ‘The Hunger Games: Catching Fire’

Living in a small town, we don’t get a lot of movies that people willingly stand in line for an hour in the freezing cold to see. However, “Catching Fire” was one of these movies. If you didn’t make it to the premier, go see it while you still can.

Making one of her first real appearances on the big screen (she was in a bunch of stuff from 2008 that no one really remembers), Jennifer Lawrence won hearts in her performance in “The Hunger Games” last year. She plays the main character, Katniss, who infamously volunteered herself as a contestant in the Hunger Games to save her little sister. If you don’t know what I’m referring to you have no business reading this article.

In this sequel, Katniss and her partner in survival Peeta face some new enemies. Not only are they going back to the Games as contestants for their district for the second time, but everyone in the capitol seems to want them dead. The big wigs are under the impression that their little stunt last year (surviving…) gave the people of the districts hope. To prevent rebellion and keep everyone in fear, they have to kill off the two victors.

And what would a good movie be without a love triangle? The whole world thinks Katniss and Peeta are in love or something but in reality, they barely speak. We know from the last movie that Katniss has no real interest in Peeta. This leads fans to believe she has a thing for her childhood friend Gale, played by super-hot Liam Hemsworth whose clearly in love with her. But he, like the rest of the world, has been tricked into believing she and Peeta are an item, so he’s pretty upset with her for a while.

Unfortunately, this movie does not have a happy ending. If you’ve read the books you know how infuriating the end is. Don’t be disappointed though, the third movie, “Mocking Jay”, will be released in 2014-15. If you haven’t read the books, don’t let me discourage you; it’s still a pretty good flick.
