Lowry High School celebrates Winterfest Week

Lowry High School celebrates Winterfest Week

Lowry kicked off Winterfest week with an exciting assembly on Monday. The assembly featured the announcement of the Winterfest royalty candidates, a performance by the cheerleaders, and Frank Bidart received the title of Honorary Buckaroo. Meg Montero also produced a short film to acquaint all Lowry students and staff with The Hunger Games franchise and outline the week’s agenda. The video included an enthralling battle scene with a lot of violence and carnage.

Throughout the week students were challenged to find as many Mockingjay pins as possible throughout the school and on Monday, Leadership hosted a lunchtime activity. The students played Trivia and answered five different questions about the Hunger Games series. Freshmen, sophomores, juniors, and seniors competed with each other. In order to win, the competitors had to answer the most questions correctly. The sophomores were victorious.

Tuesday’s lunchtime activity included another round of Trivia. The sophomores and the seniors tied for first place; with the freshman and the juniors taking last place.

On Tuesday night of Winterfest, Leadership hosted an atypical basketball game in which the varsity dance team faced off against the varsity cheerleading squad. The cheerleaders won owing much of their success to former Winnemucca Junior High basketball star, Jayci Hill. Marissa Mendoza and Makayla Lopez racked up some points as well. Although the dance team lost, they hustled hard. Megan Villarreal was their most valuable player, and with the help of Bryan Ramos, they gave the cheerleaders a run for their money. At halftime, the varsity girl’s basketball team performed as the cheerleaders and impressed the crowd with some death-defying thigh stands. Although the game had some tough calls by the refs, the crowd was nothing but pleased with the outcome.

On Wednesday eligible young men and women were auctioned off at Date Night, sponsored by The National Honor Society. The auditorium was filled to capacity with excitement as students battled back and forth in bidding wars. All proceeds will benefit a charity that has yet to be chosen. Shout out to Blake Hillyer for donating a hundred big ones. Maddie Mayo, you’re one lucky girl. Also, Amanda Brandon also threw down big bucks for one Mr. Chanse McAllister. After the auction students participated in some cosmic bowling down at Spare Time.

On Thursday, Key Club hosted a Paint the Teacher event in the cafeteria. Kids came and hurled paint at teachers from Lowry and other schools. The students found this to be very therapeutic and as far as connecting this to the Winterfest theme of “The Hunger Games”, this event could be tied to the eccentric practices of The Capital.

The Thursday lunchtime activity was once again a battle of brains in Hunger Games trivia. The freshman had Alex Contreras to support them, and the seniors had Brycen Prokasky. There were 5 questions and every contestant had trouble with answering them. Contreras struggled at first, but in the end, he pulled off a close victory with just one point.

The assembly on Friday was one to remember. The dance team performed a nostalgic 80’s inspired routine and the crowd went wild. Also, the winter sports athletes and coaches were introduced and recognized for their accomplishments, i.e., the wrestling team now holds the state record for winning the most consecutive dual matches in Nevada.

Unfortunately, the game on Friday was postponed until the following week due to weather conditions. However, there was a game on Saturday at which all Lowry JV and varsity basketball teams swept the competition. JV boys won 53-47, varsity girls won 47-36, and varsity boys won 60- 23. Fallon was sent home in a state of utter defeat.

Also on Saturday, the Winterfest royalty was crowned and the winners were boyfriend and girlfriend, Jacob Welty and Jordyn Ward.

Many students attended the dance on Saturday. The DJ played some of the hottest new hits and the students shook their tail feathers all night long.
