Boys golf looks to make late season comeback

“The best shot on the golf course is the next one.” -Ben Hogan.

That is the quote that the golfers live by and the one that inspires them to be the best they can be. After nearly a month-long hiatus from competition and a tough but rewarding couple of weeks of practice, the boy’s golf team will finally be back on the green in a tournament on April 15 at Elko and will play on Spring Creek’s course the following day.

Thus far, the season has not been exactly up to par as the team is currently 5th in the league and is having a hard time catching a break. But this small slump is due for a change as the team is prepped and ready to make a comeback in the league.

This year’s team features many new freshmen golfers who are enthusiastic about becoming better golfers and helping the team as much as they can, experienced seniors who have won a couple of state championships themselves, as well as everything in between. The team has already shown they can compete with the best and are pumped to start dominating in the league.

Top golfer, senior Andy Mendoza, believes very much in his team and is confident they have what it takes to win some of these important upcoming tournaments.

“As of right now, we as a team are helping to make each other better and better as time goes by,” said Mendoza. “We are struggling to make a comeback; we are currently in 5th place as a team and will be heading into Elko and Spring Creek this week to have a shot at the top 3 and a place to go to state. Individually we can throw out good scores. We just need the 4th or 5th man to come in with good scores. I believe that we will make a good run for it as we have an advantage at good course management.”

This is a very important week of golf for the team but they are very confident and will not give up without a fight. The boy’s golf team will be playing in Winnemucca on Thursday, April 23, against South Tahoe, Sparks, and a third team.
