Varsity boys open league with big win

Lowry’s boy’s basketball team is looking forward to a great season with a new and improved team. Last year they had a few juniors on varsity and they kept a few down on JV. That decision made for a lot of strong seniors for this year’s varsity. The experience of those seniors combined with the skills of the juniors is expected to make for a big winning season.

“Well, this season right off the bat I had high expectations for this team. We’re better than last year, bigger and more athletic. It’s going to be a special season and we will make it to the state tournament for the eighth straight year. We play for the fans and we want to give them a fun game to watch,” said captain Omar Guerrero.

They haven’t had many wins yet this season, but that doesn’t say much considering most of their game so far have been against Division 1 schools and Lowry is Division 1A. The Bucks won some of those games and in the rest, they strongly competed.

Their first game was November 28 against Reno resulting in a 60-56 win. In a tournament in Reno on December 3-5 they had a few losses, River City 59-47, McQueen 44-40, and Galena 64-46. Yet, as all these scores show, the games were close.

Their first league game was Tuesday, December 8 against the Churchill County Greenwave. This was a high-energy, competitive game and the boys finished with their first win of the league season, 48-46. One highlight of this game was a dunk by Lowry’s 6’5” post, Nathan Lutzow.

“So far this season has been great I’ve really enjoyed it, but it hasn’t quite started the way we were expecting. We had a chance to win every game so far, we just couldn’t quite get it done,” said captain Jared Taylor.

The goal this season is the same as always, plain and simple, state.

Taylor continued, “I hope to win a state championship and believe we can, but also to have a great time with the team and for everyone to get better.”

The team has a game plan and knows what they need to improve on to reach their goal.

“I think we will do very well for the rest of the season we have been doing a good job feeding the post and having patience. I think we need to have better mental focus while we are playing because a lot of times we turn the ball over on careless plays,” said captain Nathan Lutzow.

Guerrero had similar things to say, “We can always improve on everything, the biggest thing is our offense. We have people that can make plays, we just have to execute and limit turnovers.”

“Our season has been going pretty good…we’re expecting to go undefeated in league and make our eighth straight state appearance,” said senior guard Dominic Diaz.

The Buckaroos played Fernley on December 15. Details were not available at press time. The Buckaroos will not be at home again until 2016. It’s the big Elko game on Saturday, January 2 at 2:30 p.m.

The team includes Dominic Diaz, Jed Teichert, Brady Lange, Jared Taylor, Christian Riddle, Jacob Hales, Omar Guerrero, Jacob Hernandez, Brian Shettler, Joe Taylor, Brody Goucher, and Nathan Lutzow.
