Wrestling starts season off strong with tournament in Vegas

The wrestling team started their season off by traveling to a tournament in Las Vegas the first weekend in December.

With determination to place at every tournament, Caden Ricci makes sure he practices hard to accomplish this goal of his.

“I’ve been working on being faster with everything I do,” said Ricci. “My goal is to place in every tournament. During practice, I’ve been working super hard with the best wrestlers there.”

This season, the team is very young, but they all have goals they strive to achieve.

“So far, we’ve been working on learning the skills and basics of wrestling,” said Jacinto. “Adding things and improving since Lowry is a young team. My goal is definitely to finish the year and have a better season and record than last year. Being a sophomore, coaches expect more, which is understandable. We do a lot of live wrestling to make sure that we are prepared for our first match. We also try to improve our weaknesses on our own.”

Senior Taylor Corak hopes to see improvement in himself from the amount of effort being put in each practice and motivation from the coaches.

“My goals this year are to place at some big tournaments, win the smaller ones, and win state,” said Corak. “This year, we have a young team, but we are sticking to the Lowry wrestling tradition. Competing is everything in our practice room as well as the runs. The coaches do a good job at engaging competition into our wrestlers’ heads, so I think that’s what gets us mentally and physically prepared for a match.”

Senior Cade Bell is working towards the end of the season to try to win state.

“I’ve been working on my bottom work. My goal is to win the state. Not much is different from last year. I have just been working hard and getting all I can out of it,” said Cade Bell.

At the tournament, the varsity team went 2-3. They beat Green Valley 60-24. They came up short against Cibola, AZ, going 63-12 and 43-30 against Brighton, UT. Their next dual was a loss against Cimmaro,n 40-32. The final match was a success, beating Basic Academy 42-37.

Both the JV and Varsity teams host their annual Cody Louk tournament on December 20 and 21 at the Events Center.
