Frosh boys open season with two wins in Reno

So far, the freshman boys have participated in a tournament where they took a 44-40 loss to Spanish Springs, beat Spring Creek 49-9, and took a second win 59-37 against Fallon.

“We took 3rd overall at the Winter Invitational Tournament in Reno,” said first-year coach Calvin Connors. “We lost to a great Spanish Springs team who ended up in the championship game.”

They continue to work hard to prepare for upcoming games.

“So far we’ve been working on our press,” said Justin Scott. “It’s going to be really fast-paced, and a lot of different offenses because we haven’t had much time to work on them in practice.”

Although the team isn’t far into their season, they’re off to a good start.

“We played Reno…and we did pretty well,” said Scott. “We did have a couple of turnovers, but we were really able to beat them to the posts and on rebounds. We kept the pace up as we needed to, and we ended up playing pretty well.”

Just like every other team, the boys have certain aspects of their game that shine.

“Our defense is pretty good,” said Dante Cassinelli. “We’ve got really tall people, so they don’t score a whole lot.”

The players are getting down to the real focus of the game: enjoying themselves.

“My favorite part is probably playing with my friends and being able to just compete with them and have fun,” said Frank Davis.

Connors has been happy with his team thus far.

“Everyone is positive and interacts well together off the court, which makes for great cohesion on the court,” said Connors. “They express this on the court by communicating well on offense and defense. You can expect an energetic group of freshmen who play their hearts out every minute of each game.”

Practices have been going well as the team learns new things.

“He’s [Connors] really kept it organized and in the right shape,” said Scott. “We do have a group that can tend to wander a lot, but he’s kept us in great shape, making sure we do what we need to. Everything is always on point and on time, and we always get the things done that we need to within the time that we have.”

Connors wants the work to pay off.

“The main focus for the team this season is to get better every week,” said Connors. “I expect us to compete at a high level, and we as a team expect to win every game.”
