The first event of Homecoming week was Powderpuff football on Monday night. The freshmen and seniors played against the juniors and sophomores. Although the senior/freshmen team took a hard loss, the game was still fierce and intense until the last second of the game. The final score was 16-14, with the junior/sophomore team scoring a touchdown and a field goal with a minute left on the clock.
The coaches for the senior/freshmen team were Nate Nelson, Cameron Okuma, Dominic Diaz, Shaun Mentaberry, Anthony Silva, and head coach Austin Mayo. The coaches for the sophomore/junior team were Ryan Bourland, Bryan Ramos, Salvador Perez, Bryan Terry, Michael Rangel, and head coach Grant Beatty.
“I thought the coaching staff, led by Ryan Bourland, did an excellent job of calling plays, subbing girls, and winning the game. Audrey Snow was great at running back; she broke some ankles and made girls look silly. Kuskie did well as a quarterback, knowing when to run and throw,” said Beatty. “The offensive line, coached by Bryan Ramos, did a great job. Our defense was great too, got a lot of stops in the second half. I thought Brooklyn Waller laid out for some passes, and Kepa Bengochea ran good routes all game. Rebecca Jacobsen was intense and fast, carrying the football and playing defense. Overall, everyone played well and had fun.”
On the losing side, Mayo said, “The strength of our team was really our ability to play together, given the circumstances in which the team is put together. We only have a couple of practices to make this team competitive, but the girls really wanted to win, and it showed in their performance. We really didn’t have too many weaknesses. We gave up two big plays, and that was the difference. If you took those two plays away, you would see that we dominated on both sides of the ball. Unfortunately, football doesn’t work that way, though.”
Close wasn’t close enough for the seniors/freshmen team.
