The students and staff of Lowry have experienced some not-so-minor changes since the beginning of the school. Changes include shorter lunches, a larger selection on the cafeteria menu, the removal of block days, and earlier start times.
“So far the changes at Lowry have been going well. Students seem to understand and respect the new schedule, new cell phone policy, and overall goal of making Lowry a great place to be,” said Lowry Principal Mr. Ray Parks.
The decisions that students have made over the years are the reason for the abbreviated lunches. For example, last year there was an incident where a group of kids left campus at lunch and consumed multiple illegal substances. They had too much time during lunch, so to fix the problem, the students have less time.
Block days have been replaced with a seven-period schedule every day.
Although there are no more block days, there still are late starts on Thursdays; school starts at 8:55 a.m. Along with the elimination of block days, there are changes to our start and end times. Lowry starts at 7:55 a.m and ends at 2:45 p.m.
One point of entrance is one of the other changes that was made for this school year. The administrators have locked the gate between the main building and the science building. They want the students to go through the glass hallway. This is to make the school a somewhat safer place.
In addition, students are now allowed to use our cellular devices between classes. Last year, the students were not allowed to use their cell phones at all during school, unless they were given permission or it was lunchtime.
One definite improvement is that the cafeteria now features a daily salad bar and many other healthy options for students.
