On May 14 and 15, the boys’ golf team competed in the NIAA 3A State Tournament at the Mountain Falls course in Pahrump. The team finished with a total score of 697. Their top finishers were Dillon Patterson, with a score of 170, Zane Fifield, with 171, and Kobe Stoker with 175.
“We had a couple of rough days, and some really high scores,” said senior Peyton Capellen. “It was a rough course, and we finished 4th out of 5th as a team.”
Competing against golfers from all over the state, the boys got to meet many new people.
“There were about 50 golfers that competed,” said Capellen. “It was cool golfing with golfers from all over the state. I got to meet some new people. When you’re golfing, you talk with people, and you get to make new friends.”
The boys’ new friends also presented some stiff competition.
“There were some good golfers in the South,” said Capellen. “Boulder City had a really great team. They beat Spring Creek, which was our number one team in the North. We got to play with some kids from there that were really competitive golfers.”
Along with the more challenging competition, the tournament was also more difficult on the regulatory side of things.
“State competition is a lot more official,” said Capellen. “There are a lot more rules. Each group that goes off has a monitor that keeps track of your scores. They really make sure that there’s no cheating and that no rules are broken. It’s definitely a more serious kind of tournament than usual, and more people are watching you, so it’s a little more nerve-wracking too.”
Despite the dismal end to the season, the boys still had fun.
“It was a cool course, and we’re lucky we got to go play it,” said Capellen. “It was a fun way to end the season.”
