Coconut water and its benefits

Coconut water and its benefits

Many people in society have never tried coconut water because they have never heard of it (yes, that’s right), or it may be because they have heard of the beverage having “negative side effects”. While the negative side effects may be true, they only occur if – like anything else – consumed in high amounts.

While coconuts are found growing near the coastal waters all over the world, the majority of this fruit is found in Indonesia, Philippines, India, Brazil, and Sri Lanka. The coconuts used for coconut water are the green, immature ones because once they mature, the water inside turns into the actual “meat” of the fruit. The meat of the mature coconut can be later used to make coconut milk.

This water found inside the small, green “coco” is rich in carbohydrates, potassium, sodium, and magnesium; all of which the body needs. The levels of potassium in this water (660 mg) are higher than that of a banana (422 mg).

This multi-beneficial beverage is used to replace fluids after exercise, and dehydration, and is useful for people who have high blood pressure as it may help lower the levels of it.

However, due to the high levels of potassium, coconut water should be avoided by people who have high levels of potassium in their blood. Another precaution to have in mind before consuming an abundant amount is that while coconut water is an uber way to hydrate the body, it is obviously not meant to replace water. Taking in too many ounces of coconut water at a time can lead to kidney problems and irregular heartbeat. ( The Institute of Medicine has set an adequate intake for potassium at 4,700 mg/day for adults. (

Although this drink has its negative effects, it doesn’t mean that one should refrain from drinking it. The previously mentioned effects will only happen if one gets hooked and drinks more than two 11 oz bottles in one day. (

Although everyone is different in what they choose to eat and drink, coconut water is a great, healthy alternative if one doesn’t feel like drinking water or soda with their meal or if they missed eating that banana at lunch. Coconut water is a nutritious beverage that, when drank in moderation and appropriate amounts, like any other food or drink, should be acknowledged. Some common coconut water brands are O.N.E., Vita Coco, Zico, and Naked.
