Every year, the senior athletes strive to be noticed at higher levels, and every year, a select few Lowry Athletes make the jump. This year is no different, as Gratian Dawson, Brooks Bergenheier, and Breanna Sowinski have been selected to make the leap from high school sports to college sports.
Gratian Dawson will be attending EOU, a college located in La Grande, OR. A lot of hard work goes into becoming a college athlete, and Dawson is no different. Dawson has continuously put in the work and dedication.
“Gratian Dawson dedicated himself to football by sacrificing his time to physically and mentally get better as a football player,” said head football coach Taua Cabatbat. “Not only is he a hard-working individual on the field, in the weight room, in the classroom, but he is also a caring individual who truly looks out for the best interest of his peers and close friends.”
Dawson had other college opportunities but chose to continue his passion at EOU.
“I had some other opportunities. I had a visit scheduled for Montana Western, but I’ve been to all EOU camps in the past, and I just really liked it up there,” said Dawson. “Eastern Oregon University and its just a great environment up there, it feels like home. It’s just a small town, just like Winnemucca, and a smaller campus also. I can’t wait to progress my football knowledge and skills at Eastern. I have always loved football since I was a little kid. It’s just a great sport.”
Sowinski will attend Missouri Valley College on a powerlifting scholarship.
Moving on up as well is Lowry’s Brooks Bergenheier. He has chosen to continue to play baseball at Lamar Community College in Lamar, CO. There, he will not only continue to play the sport that he loves but will also continue to increase his knowledge in communications.
“I am attending Lamar Community College in Lamar, CO to further my academics in communications and journalism and to continue playing baseball at a higher level,” said Bergenheier.
Bergenheier selected this college for the familiar area as well as the skills he hopes to pick up, which will benefit him as a person and as a player.
“I chose this school because I am familiar with the area, and I did a tour last summer.
I was recruited by one of their coaches who saw my potential,” said Bergenheier. “I am choosing to continue playing baseball because I feel like if I combine my skills with those that I will be able to gain at Lamar, I believe I can become even better than I was at Lowry and prior.”
