JV girl’s basketball starts season with 2-1 record in tournament

JV girls’ basketball is starting out their season on a high note. On December 5, 6, and 7, the team attended their first tournament, where they lost to Douglas but beat Spanish Springs and Bishop Manogue.

“Our team is 2-1 right now against schools in a higher division, which is very good,” said freshman Kaylie Franklin.

Over the weekend, the team learned where their power lies.

“Our team’s strengths are working hard until the very last buzzer goes off,” said Franklin. “Our last two games were won in the last quarter.”

The girls are prepared to launch into the rest of their season.

“For only three weeks of practice before our game, we all played really well, and I think we are going to be some good competition to the other schools,” said junior Alexxus Robinson.

Just like every team, JV girls’ basketball has its share of struggles.

“Our weakness is shooting by far,” said Robinson. “If we made all the shots we took, we would definitely have a lot higher scores.”

Basketball is a fast-paced game, but the team is starting to learn the value of taking the speed down a notch, allowing themselves time to set up plays.

“We start running the ball way too fast, which makes us mess up,” said Franklin. “We need to work on slowing it down and taking care of it.”

Despite this, the girls have their minds set on improvement and are optimistic about what the season will bring.

“We all try really hard and give our all, so I think as the season goes we will get more competitive,” said Robinson. “I’m looking forward to all the fun times we’re going to have, whether we win or lose.”
