Open your eyes: Vocabulary

Just as society is changing through time, so is vocabulary. Incorrect vocabulary is being used so often that it has turned into acceptable vocabulary. It’s pathetic that so many individuals are too incompetent or too lazy to speak properly. It has become an everyday habit to use improper, made-up words. Some of these words have even been added to the dictionary due to the fact that it’s nearly impossible to eliminate the use of them.

According to the site Mental Floss, unbelievable words have been recently added to some dictionaries such as the following five: Crunk, Po-po, Grrrl, Mankini, and Bromance. If you are aware of these terms, and use them regularly; you should reexamine your vocabulary. Proper language is not only impressive but also professional. I applaud those who expand their vocabulary and make use of sophisticated words.

Texting is a large part of the reason why the public is so unprofessional with its word choice in this generation. In order to learn and retain vocabulary, especially more advanced language, individuals must use the words in their own speech and writing. Instead of using advanced vocabulary regularly; text terms are being used much more frequently thus retaining bad vocabulary rather than a higher standard of words.

Rather than expressing laughter by simply stating “That was hilarious”; a person often replies with “LOL” to show laughter. LOL, meaning laugh out loud, or also adding extra O’s and L’s to express extra laughter through a text.

Language is an important skill to have in this decade, without it many things may fail. Each individual needs to dedicate a little more of his/her daily routine to using more complex words properly. Words, the main way of communication, are to the key ensuring the success of the human race. Don’t let vocabulary be our downfall.
