Halfway through the season, the girl’s freshman basketball team is enjoying a lot of success.
Over Christmas break, they played in the Christmas Classic in Reno and won the championship playing games against Douglas, Reno High School, Bishop Minogue, and Spanish Springs.
At the junior high the team was not quite as successful.
“The coaching [at Lowry] is really good and I think also just as basketball players, we’ve had more experience now,” said Ortiz.
Freshman coach Larry Renteria selected Ortiz as the Student-SAthletre of the Week. Ortiz gets the team going on other offense and defense in games and practice.
“She approaches the practice and games with passion and the desire to improve,” said Renteria. “Each practice she has a growth-minded attitude and is always available to help her teammates on and off the court.”
Ortiz leads by example both on and off the court with her hustle and ambition.
“She understands that she can control the game by controlling her effort and emotions,” said Renteria. “By controlling herself, recognizing mistakes, and working to overcome mistakes, she has been able to control the game. Her defense is constantly disrupting the opposing team’s offense.”
With a month left in the season, there is work left to be done for Ortiz and the team.
“Just keeping the streak going of no losses,” said Ortiz.
