The Special Olympics track season starts in April. Mrs. Shelley Wells has been involved in the program for seven years as an assistant coach. She and the athletes she coaches work hard for three long months.
“We practice twice a week, Tuesdays and Thursdays. The best part of coaching is watching the competitiveness of athletes, but also the great sportsmanship that goes on,” said Wells.
This season will be a little different as the program will be seeing some new members.
“In the past, we have had athletes from 1st to 12th grade, this year we will be having adult athletes joining us from Humboldt Human Development Services,” said Wells.
Athletes over the age of eight who participate in the regional competition will be going to the state competition in Reno, which will be held June 5-6 at the University of Nevada, Reno. There are some very successful athletes in this program.
“The medals are my favorite part of track. I have a lot and hang them on my bedroom wall,” said participant Sam Newman.
Track is a big commitment but the athletes seem to enjoy every second of it.
“Running and competing against other teams is my favorite,” said participant Eric Barber.
Of course, it’s not all work and no play. Wells’ favorite part of spring track is being outside after a long, cold winter, enjoying the warm sun and fresh air. Wells also enjoys seeing friendships being made.
“It is really heartwarming to see all the kindness that the athletes show towards each other,” said Wells.
I like to do track in the spring because it is very fun. We do running, walking, jumping, and throwing. We practice at the Lowry High School track. Sometimes if the weather is bad we practice inside, even though we would rather not.
“I would rather run outside for track,” said Jo Maloon.
Practice dates are Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4:30-5:30 p.m. beginning April 7.
The Northern Nevada Track and Field Regional Competition is May 16 and the Summer Games will be held June 5-6, 2015.
