Ashlee Barron was born in Winnemucca and has played softball and volleyball since she was young and has played both throughout high school. She has been part of the volleyball and softball programs for four years. She has also been in the yearbook for all four years and is now an editor. She has also been in fashion design and construction for four years. Because of all that, she has been chosen as the Student-Athlete of the Issue.
Barron has been playing softball since she was five years old and volleyball since she was in sixth grade. She has continued to play for the high school teams and club teams in both sports.
“Softball I was introduced at a very young age, so I found that I really loved the sport,” she said. “For volleyball, I got invited to a club team at a young age and loved it ever since. I continued to improve at it and tried out for the Junior High School team. I was fortunate to make the teams for both sports in high school.”
Barron said that she doesn’t have a preference for volleyball or softball and that she loves both sports equally. Although she loves them both equally, she stated, “I always enjoy the sport I’m playing at the time more.”
She said that her favorite part of each sport is the intensity and being able to occasionally go all out and dive for a ball and make a great play. One could understand what she means because who doesn’t like to make a diving play every once in a while?
Barron said that some of her favorite memories in her sports are “for volleyball playing with my best friend Jilly and for softball sticker day, fungo day, team dinners, overnighters, playing with my cousin Caitlynn and great friends. I just have a lot of fun with all these girls and I’m going to miss them all so much, and the coaches are awesome.”
Barron said that her parents have been her inspiration in sports.
She said, “My parents for sure have spent countless hours taking me to go hit balls and take grounders. They played pepper with me in volleyball when I could barely pass. They have inspired me to never give up and always pushed me to be my best.”
She said that her parents are always there for her and they are huge supporters of everything that she does.
Barron doesn’t plan to play sports in college but would like to take part in intramurals. She plans on attending UNR and getting a business degree.
