For the last four years, Joe Peterson has been knocking the lights out of kids on the football field and pinning them on the wrestling mat. Joe starts at middle linebacker and also plays on special teams during punts, punt returns, and kickoffs. During his two years on the varsity team, he has 27 solo tackles, 56 in total tackles, and averages 4.3 tackles per game according to MaxPreps.
Sports have been a part of Joe’s life for many years.
“I started playing football when I was around 9 and started wrestling when I was 12,” said Joe.
Joe’s parents have made a big impact on why he plays sports.
“My parents have made an impact on me in my sports life because they support my brother and me and make sports possible for us,” Joe said.
Joe thinks if is younger brother is a role model.
“My role model is my brother; he made varsity football as a freshman,” said Peterson.
Although Joe enjoys wrestling too, football is definitely his favorite.
“My favorite sport is football because I really like playing defense and am good at it,” said Joe.
As this is Joe’s senior year, there are lots of things he will miss about wrestling and football at Lowry, but he will miss the adventures he went on with his teammates the most.
“I will miss all the fun trips I got to go on with all my teammates,” Peterson said.
Joe has had many coaches while at Lowry and is grateful for their help in making him the athlete he is today.
“Coaches I would like to thank would be Brooks, Cabatbat, Scott, Hornbarger, and Roberts for helping me become what I am today in sports,” said Joe.
Head coach of the varsity football team, Taua Cabatbat, believes Joe has been a great leader this year for his team.
“Joe Peterson was chosen by his teammates as team captain. His teammates trust him to be a leader, and so far, he has done a good job keeping the team together and moving forward,” said Cabatbat. “Joe has done a good job pushing his team on the field during practice and games. He has embraced the role of team captain, which is why he is a good selection for the Athlete of the Issue.”
When Joe is not playing sports, he enjoys cruisin’ and chillin’.
“I like to go on rides on my streetbike and just hang with friends,” said Peterson.
After this year, Peterson hopes to continue playing sports in college.
“After high school, I want to continue on with sports,” Joe said.
