This three-sport athlete has been surrounded by sports her entire life. She has been recognized by the community for her dedication to sports and academics. Not only does she have smarts, but she was also voted Homecoming Queen this year. Shelby Garrison has been selected as the Student-Athlete of the Issue.
Since her freshman year, she has been involved in soccer, basketball, and track. Out of the three she participates in, she favors soccer.
“I’ve played ever since I was in fourth grade. It has always been my favorite because most of my friends play as well,” said Shelby Garrison. “I like soccer because it takes both physical and mental strength. It’s a challenge that I have always enjoyed.”
All student-athletes have some sort of motivation to keep improving and have mental steadiness. Garrison’s, as she stated eagerly, are her parents and her sister.
“My mom and dad come to watch me at almost every game,” said Shelby Garrison. “Whether it’s at home or away. My dad also helps coach soccer and track. One of the best things about sports is that I have always been able to play with my sister, Rachel.”
Her sister Rachel Garrison, a junior, mentions that Shelby has also impacted her life in many ways.
“Shelby works hard at everything she does. She’s a great leader for the whole team,” said Rachel Garrison. “She is not only a great soccer player, but she’s also so fun to be around. I love playing with Shelby. She inspires me every day, and she’s a great role model on and off the field.”
Shelby has also been very protective and motivational.
“She’s taught me to always be myself and to work hard at everything I do,” said Rachel.
Garrison also mentioned how playing sports has given her the opportunity to build friendships, get support from them, and have fun at the same time.
“My friends are also very supportive. Most of them play the same sports that I do, and we always have a good time,” said Shelby.
Coach Jennifer Partee also noticed how Shelby has become more comfortable with putting herself out there.
“Shelby has been a highly dedicated, driven person both on and off the field,” said Partee. “She has become a strong leader, and we certainly have seen her grow in this area over the years, moving from a quiet leader to a more outgoing leader. Whatever Shelby chooses, she makes it her job to do it well and to take both her work and play seriously. She has certainly improved in confidence and has taken her level of play to a higher level, learning to anticipate plays and moving the ball forward on the field.”
Partee emphasizes how Shelby has been an asset to the team.
“She has persevered in her shot practice and has confidently taken every opportunity to shoot the ball,” said Partee. “We will certainly miss Shelby in the Lowry soccer program.”
When asked where she would be attending college, she wasn’t sure, but had an idea.
“I’m not sure yet, but I would like to play soccer at Carroll College in Helena, Montana,” said Garrison.
