Track has been training some very talented athletes, but two student-athletes stood out to the head coach, Grant Beatty, this week.
Beatty chose Jace Mentaberry and Whitney Willey as this week’s Student-Athletes of the Week for track.
Beatty is very impressed with Willey’s performance last week at their track meet in Elko, and he was also very impressed with Mentaberry’s skills and strong finishes in many events at the meet.
“Whitney Willey got a new personal record in the shotput with a throw of 27 feet and 6 inches, and Jace Mentaberry put in a full day’s work with strong finishes in the 110 and 300 hurdles, 200m, and the pole vault,” said Beatty.
Whitney Willey has set some new goals for herself to accomplish by the end of the season and is having a great season.
“Track is great. It’s structured and enjoyable,” said Whitney. “I hope to get 32ft in shot put by the end of the year and 100 ft in discus. I definitely see myself meeting these goals by the end of the season, as my personal records right now are 86ft in discus and 27ft in shot put.”
So far, the season is going very well for Jace Mentaberry, and he is very hopeful of making it to state for his event, the 300-meter hurdles, and sees the team going big at state this year.
“So far, the season is going pretty well,” said Mentaberry. “I have set some goals for myself, which are, make it to state for the 300-meter hurdles, and I see the team bringing many athletes to state and hopefully winning in the events they came for.”
