Things to know about high school

High school is an important part of our lives. You spend most of your teenage years here and the experiences that we go through shape us into who we are. Here are some things that you should know about high school.

The world of technology has affected our lives dramatically. The new era of school has been moving along with it. Most of your teachers are going paperless. Most of your assignments are going to be on the computer when you write essays teachers will make you type them. Google Docs is going to be your best friend. Google Docs is probably the best typing program because you can work on it anywhere as long as you have an internet connection and a device (like a computer, a phone, etc). The program saves every time you make a change or add something to the document so you never have to worry about losing your work. Google has other programs that it offers like Google Slides, Google Drive, Google Sheets. It even offers a program called Google Classroom where teachers can upload all your assignments and it can reword what you guys did in class while you were gone. The program also allows you to turn in your work online. You’re most likely going to use Google Slides, Docs.

A lot of people tend to slack off in the beginning but you’re digging yourself a hole you can’t get out of. Slacking off at the beginning of the quarter is really bad and I recommend you don’t do it. It is much harder to raise your grades at the end of each quarter. You have certain grade requirements that your assignments or tests have to meet just to get them up. If you’re going to want to get a little lazy then slack off at the end of the quarter, your assignments won’t really have a huge impact but it depends what your grade is. Slacking off can really kill some people so don’t do it. Just like slacking off at the beginning of every quarter, slacking off at the beginning of high school isn’t really smart. If you fail a class while you’re a freshman or sophomore, you’re going to spend your senior year trying to get the credit in order to graduate. Sometimes those classes stop seniors from walking with their class because they weren’t able to get their credit to graduate so you most likely be doing summer school until you finish so you can get your diploma. Your junior year and senior year you will most likely have the option to take college classes. Don’t be afraid to take those classes they’re a bit challenging and stressful but it will be worth it in the end.

Extracurricular activities are fun and beneficial. Participating in sports is probably the best part of high school. It not only lets you get out of class but in order to play sports you have to maintain good grades and that just gives you another motivation to be on top of your work and to keep the required GPA so that you can keep playing. If you participate in a sport your team basically becomes family, you do everything together. Not only do you go on fun adventures but you make new friends. Sports are not the only option for extracurricular activities. There are clubs that you can join or make. These clubs will help you get more involved with your school and it would give you a chance to show everyone else your talents. Joining clubs that require you to get community service hours is a good thing. Having community service hours makes your college/job applications look better because it shows you’re involved and committed.

The last thing you should know about high school is that bullying is a very serious thing and you can get in trouble for doing it. Don’t be the bully. If you don’t have anything nice to say then don’t say anything at all. How you look doesn’t define who you are. Keep your circle small and don’t pretend to be someone you’re not.

Although high school can sound scary at times it is truly an essential part of growing up. It is like the “welcome” to the real world. Nothing prepares you more for the real world than creating good education habits from the time you are in high school. The tips above are not meant to scare you. If you are an incoming freshman or even if you are in your senior year of high school it is simply to prepare you or to improve in areas you may be lacking in. Make sure to use all the tools given to you to your advantage but most importantly enjoy those four years they are not joking when they say they go by fast!
