At the age of 18 you are considered an adult according to some standards, but not all of them; you can get married, adopt children, purchase weapons, and defend your country, but you cannot purchase alcohol. It’s not until the ripe age of 21 that one can legally drink.
About 80 percent of college students drink according to the Washington Post. If the drinking age was lowered to 18, college students who drink would not be at risk of tarnishing their reputation with a citation for Minor In Consumption (MIC). Having a MIC on a record could keep you from getting into certain schools and even hold you back from getting your dream job. 72% of high school students drink, but the age of 18 is when most people start drinking according to the Washington Post.
In many other countries like Mexico, Australia, and Canada, the drinking age is 16 or 18, but why not the United States? The United States spends a large amount of money trying to stop underage drinking, but it is not effective. Many teens are still going to drink even though they know the consequences of getting caught, just because of the thrill that it gives.
Lowering the drinking age could stop some kids from being peer pressured.
