Lowry’s swim team traveled to Truckee on Saturday, March 18, to compete in the Aqua 5. The meet consisted of eight swim teams.
Coach Shelby Ruff is a science teacher at Lowry and is the swim coach as of last year. She thought the first meet was a good start for the season.
“Our meet last week went well with most athletes swimming as fast or faster than they did at the end of last season,” said Ruff.
Freshman Hunter Lewis felt that his first swim meet was very supportive.
“I think this swim meet was good. I mean, we cheered each other on during our races and congratulated them afterwards,” said Lewis.
Nathan Perkinson, a junior, also thought this meet was a strong start.
“It was, for one, a nice pool, even though it was crowded. I liked coming back and swimming competitively again, seeing where I’m at and seeing what I need to improve on,” said Perkinson. “I think we did pretty good, for it being a lot of newcomers.”
The increased elevation did not seem to have an effect on the swimmer’s performance.
“Twenty stroke times have already qualified for Regionals, and that’s pretty hard because we’re at a higher elevation and going up against kids who are also in a higher division,” said Perkinson.
The swim team itself should also get better in terms of strokes, times, and having more people qualify for Regionals and maybe even State.
“As a whole, we mostly need consistent starts and turns and minor stroke fixes while we continue to improve endurance,” said Ruff.
The next swim meet will be at Truckee on Saturday, March 25.
