On March 23, varsity track attended the Fallon Elks Invitational meet at Churchill County High School, where several individuals and groups placed.
Leading the Northern 3A boys in both shotput and discus, junior Jasper Glasgow continued his high-scoring streak.v
“Jasper continued to do really well in shot and disc,” said coach Grant Beatty. “He took first overall for shot for the second weekend in a row. He took first last weekend in Spring Creek, so he’s been doing really well; he works super hard; it’s just a credit to his technique and all of the work he puts in.”
In the women’s division, senior Rachel Garrison also followed a Spring Creek first place in both shotput and discus with medals in Fallon.
“Rachel Garrison is doing very well on shot and disk,” said Beatty. “She’s kind of leading the pack there. A girl from Reno got her this weekend, but she took second in both.”
Both boys’ and girls’ 4x800m relay teams took second place overall.
“Our boys 4×8 relay team has been doing really well,” said Beatty. “That’s Brandon Lee, Jeremy Walker, Will Kracaw, and Sam Roth. We’ve got a really good group there. Our girls 4×8, the two Kuskie girls, Jovi and Becca, Adia Bengochea, and Kinsey Albisu, have been running really well, too. They’re a really strong group.”
The only division of the team that isn’t leading the pack is sprinting.
“We’re still trying to develop some sprinters,” said Beatty. “We’re a little short-handed with some sprinters right now, so we’re trying to get those guys up to par and confident. It’s definitely one of our weak areas, but we’re about as competitive as we can be.”
The team’s biggest focus for improvement is when they’re not running.
“Just trying to develop good routines, like practice routines that carry over to our meets,” said Beatty. “We’re trying to kind of train them and their mindsets so when they get there they know how to handle themselves, know what’s expected of them, and they’re not just kind of losing their minds, kind of going and hanging out with their friends and having fun.”
With the graduation of last year’s seniors, the team does not anticipate as big a turnout at state.
“I don’t know if we’ll have as large a group going to state as we have in years past,” said Beatty. “Last year, the girls actually won the team state championships. A lot of those girls have graduated. We do have a couple of individuals who we think can make a big impact at state. We’re kind of working towards that, but we’re thinking it’ll be a smaller group than previous years. Still, nonetheless, we’re trying to get as many people as we can there. We hope to compete and put up a good show.”
