It was a week of ups and some downs for the varsity volleyball team as they defeated Elko earlier in the week in three sets, and lost to league leaders Truckee at home in four sets. The team was set to play Sparks at home on Saturday but that game was postponed until later this month.
The Bucks have a good group of players this year and have the potential to go to a state championship. They put up a very impressive performance against school rivals Elko as they won each set very comfortably on Wednesday evening of last week. The Truckee Wolverines had eliminated the Bucks last year during regionals and the Bucks were poised to get vengeance against Truckee, but unfortunately, Friday would not be that day. In an intense four sets, the Bucks were defeated by the Wolverines.
Junior Madison Montero had only positive things to say about the win against Elko.
“In our win against Elko, we showed excellent teamwork and discipline. It was extremely exciting to beat Elko on their home court. Personally, this was my favorite game of the season so far. I think we all had a lot of fun,” said Montero.
Fellow junior Hannah Hillyer had mixed feelings about the games and is remaining optimistic for the rest of the season. Hillyer also echoed Montero’s thoughts on the Elko match.
“It was great to finally beat Elko on their home court. Against Truckee, I thought we played very well as a team but just fell short. At no point in the match did I feel like we couldn’t come back. We just need to continue working hard in practice and keep improving so next time, Truckee doesn’t know what hit them,” said Hillyer enthusiastically.
The varsity volleyball team has learned a great deal from this hard-fought loss against Truckee and can’t wait to begin the second half of the season. The Bucks are back in action on October 9 in Fernley to try to defeat the Vaqueros again for the second time this season.
