As the school year comes to a close so does the hard work of Lowry’s athletes, coaches, and fans who have worked in different ways all year to make it to playoffs or to try and bring the ultimate prize of a state championship home. While Lowry did not win any state championships this year athletically, nearly every one of our sports teams made it to the playoffs or were competitive. Lowry athletics are about hard work, perfection, and excellence; every sport pushes its players to their potential and the results can be seen in how well our athletics did this year.
Football: The football team had a solid year, they had an overall record of 7-4. The team was a powerhouse on the ground, they racked up 283.4 yards per game and were a force all year on the. They made it to the playoffs but lost in a disappointing game to Churchill County 34-7.
Seniors: Colin Doyle, Beau Billingsley, Andy Mendoza, Jacob Von Aspern, Christian Gray, Kyle Tarr, Garrett Naveran, Frederick Shafer, Thomas Schwartz, Caleb Ahnefeld, Donovan Brumm, Jose Bernal, Jacob Welty, Chris Tyree, Kelvin Meza, Felipe Moreno, Jose Ruiz, Luis Cardenas, Anthony Hummel, Benjamin Tyree, Blake Hillyer, and Blake Duncan.
Volleyball: The Volleyball team this year had a stellar season, they went 27 and 4 and dominated almost every team they played. They took second this year in league standings to Elko and many players finished in the top 5 for different statistics. Darion Iturriaga finished first in digs, Jillian Albright finished 5th in digs, and Juliana Velasco was 4th in kills and 5th in hitting average. Auri Criddle also had a nice year finishing 3rd in digs and being one of the team’s main leaders. The team’s season sadly came to an end with a 3-1 loss to Truckee but overall it was an amazing year and with such a good group of upcoming seniors next year should be even better.
Seniors: Auriana Criddle and Meg Montero.
Boy’s Soccer: This year was a down year for Lowry’s soccer team, they finished the season with an overall record of 5 wins and 14 losses. While they did struggle, the soccer team has a lot of potential next year with the upcoming seniors who will have to step up next year to have a shot at the state championship. Jesus Escobedo led the team in goals and Kevin Blanco led the team in assists, the offense shouldn’t be the problem next year however the team needs to focus on improving their defense.
Seniors: Steven Cholico, Ivan Sepulveda, Kevin Blanco, Emilio Castillejos, Colton Irons, Giovanni Hernandez, Wyatt Snider, Luis Pardini, Roberto Sanchez, Anthony Franco, Homero Esquivel and Stetson Roark.
Girl’s Soccer: The girls had a solid season this year that saw them into the first round, they finished with an overall record of 9-9-3 ties. Monique Rodriguez led the team in goals and Alyssa Jones, Iridiana Gonzalez, and Jasmine Marchand, also provided valuable contributions that led to a successful year. The year started out slow but the team finished strong winning 5 of their last 8 games, however, the team lost in the first round of the playoffs 4-0 to South Tahoe which brought an end to a great season.
Seniors: Alyssa Jones, Jasmine Marchand, Nicole Ramirez, Iridiana Gonzalez and Monique Rodriguez.
Girl’s Golf: This rewarding year for the Girl’s Golf team was led by Alyssa Dendary, they won two tournaments and finished 4th in the state. The team is young and Dendary is the only senior that is graduating and even without her, the team should be strong next year.
Seniors: Alyssa Dendary.
Cross Country: There is a lot of hard work and determination that goes into being a distance runner. This year’s team achieved great things and destroyed the competition in the process. After countless practices in the hot sun, the team became tough as nails. This year, the lone Lowry competitor at state was none other than the speed demon himself, Hayden Jeppsen. Good season, Cross Country.
Seniors: Ethan Andrews, Hayden Jeppsen, Shannon Munk, and Haley Weber.
Wrestling: Lowry’s run of State Championships came to an end but the Bucks still had a successful season. They set the state record for dual wins at 108 and won their 7th consecutive zone championship.
Seniors: Beau Billingsley, Kevin Blanco, Luis Cardenas, Blake Duncan, Blake Hillyer, Anthony Hummel, Kelvin Meza, Gabe Molina and Tristen Waller.
girl’s basketball: The 2014 season for the girl’s basketball team gave Lowry’s fans plenty to cheer about, the team went 23-6 en route to dominating our league with an undefeated record and being one of the best teams in Nevada statistically. Alyssa Dendary was the team’s leading scorer with 10 points a game and Kylee Mcclellan kept the offense running and led the team in assists all year. The team’s strong points were stout defense and tenacious rebounding. They pulled down 33.6 rebounds a game and averaged 12.6 steals a game. The team’s season came to an end when they lost in the playoffs to Faith Lutheran but they have a relatively young squad and despite the loss of three starters, the team should have another great season next year.
Seniors: Alyssa Jones, Kylee McClellan, Alyssa Dendary, Meg Montero and Jasmine Marchand.
boy’s basketball: Despite losing all their starters except one, (Garrett Naveran) Lowry still had a good season and made it all the way to the semi-finals in the playoffs. They finished with a 19-10 record which could have been better but Lowry lost several close games that could have swayed either way in the final moments. Christian Gray was the team’s leading scorer with 11.1 points per game followed by Nathan Lutzow with 10.7 points per game. Overall the team declined statistically from the previous year but with a group of tremendous juniors coming up the team should be a contender for the state title next year.
Seniors: Sterling Dennis, Roberto Sanchez, Thomas Schwartz, Jacob Von Aspern, Christian Gray and Garrett Naveran.
Baseball: Unfortunately the baseball program missed the playoffs for the second consecutive year. A record of 5-23 is indicative of the season. Although the team struggled to play consistently throughout the year they finished the season playing some of their best baseball. With the loss of only three seniors, the team looks to bounce back next year.
Seniors: Colin Doyle, Donovan Brumm, and Sterling Dennis.
Softball: The Lady Bucks had a good season. They went to playoffs and lost to Fallon and Fernley. Their season ended 23-8. That’s a lot better than baseball did.
Seniors: Shelby McKinnon, Alyssa Dendary, Alyssa Jones, and Kylee McClellan.
Boys Golf: This year was a solid year for the golf team, Andy Mendoza, Liam Sparks, and Hunter Dimock all qualified for state, Mendoza took 5th in state and the golf team has several good up-and-coming golfers for next year. The team performed well in almost every tournament and was a force to be reckoned with all year.
Seniors: Hunter Dimock, Andy Mendoza, Blake Duncan, Brycen Prokasky, and Liam Sparks.
Swimming: The swim team swam their hearts out this year and had a stellar roster of swimmers. Head coach Mike Owens made sure, day in and day out, that his swimmers were swimming in tip-top form. Many swimmers qualified for Zone and State and they showed the competition that they were ruthless.
Seniors: Leonardo Avila, Bridget Cervantes, Abby Flores, Chris Franco, Sabrina Jensen, Emma Kracaw and Tristen Waller.
Track: The Track and Field team was spitting hot fire this year. They killed it at their meets individually and as a team. At zone, they performed admirably. They were able to send many athletes to compete in State, overall it was a good season in track.
Seniors: Jenna Adams, Courtney Boucher, Auriana Criddle, Hayden Jeppsen, Kelvin Meza, Meg Montero, Monique Rodriguez, Haley Weber and Michael Wing.
