What to Watch: ‘Highway to Heaven’

Many shows these days do not deliver any meaningful messages that could change our outlook on life situations, relationships with your parents, siblings and maybe even strangers. They simply don’t make a TV series with a meaningful life message portrayed in each episode.

Many of the shows that are currently aired on television or streamed have a mysterious plot, dramatized storylines and many useless concepts that are just for momentary entertainment.

“Highway to Heaven” is an example of the high caliber in entertainment. In this staggering TV series from the 80s, there seems to be more than just a message in every episode from beginning to end. The main character Jonathan Smith, played by the show creator himself, Michael Landon, is a probationary angel sent to earth to help people with their troubles. In the first episode, he meets a bitter ex-cop named Mark Gordon, played by Victor French. After Jonathan helps him understand that life isn’t as bad as he’s made it out to be in his head, Mark discovers his identity and teams up with him on his mission to travel and help all kinds of people.

Throughout the five seasons aired from 1984 to 1989, this humbling series will make you take a second look at life and realize that every person around is dealing with their own baggage that can be lifted, just a little, with kindness. Most of the episodes focused on common human failures, egotism, bitterness, greed, and some episodes touched on racism and cancer. This is just a snapshot of the sheer quality of the show. “Highway to Heaven” is based on a religious sense but it doesn’t have to be interpreted as such. The topics that arise on the show can happen to anyone and at any time in life.

All five seasons of this one-of-a-kind series, “Highway to Heaven”, can be streamed on Netflix.
