Academic Challenge begins new season

By Peyton Capellen Posted December 20, 2016

Few know who the members of the Academic Challenge are as they compete in obscurity. However, just like any sports team, they represent Lowry when they compete against other schools in northern Nevada.

The roster includes Bradley Murdock, Caden Smith, Cody Hawkins, Jacob Means, Josh Hales, Josie Warn, Mateo Hernandez, Tailor West, Tanner Ames, Victoria Jacinto, Zach White, and Megan Johnson. The team is coached by Ms. Lisa Scott.

Caden Smith of the Academic Challenge team explained how their practices go and how they prepare for tournaments.

“Each of us has a little buzzer with a button we press to answer a question. Mrs. Scott has a packet of questions ranging from playwrights to sports, to movies, etc. As we get correct answers we tally them up and before a tournament, the people with the most tallies get to go,” said Smith. “We all sort of play a specific role too. For example, I know a lot about pop culture, Cody Hawkins (team captain) excels in sports, Zack White is our math guy, Josie Warn excels at playwrights, books, and such, and so on and so on.”

The team has done well in the past, including winning state. Last year, however, they were knocked off in the playoffs.

Josie Warn, however, likes their chances this year as many of the teams graduated a lot of seniors.

The team takes between 6-7 members to each tournament. Their first tournament will be held on January 18 at White Pine High School.
