New AP class has people psyched

A new opportunity for people interested in the mannerisms of the human brain has arrived to the school curricula. AP Psychology is a recent addition to the rest of the AP courses offered. The teacher who was chosen to teach this demanding course was Ms. Michele Doyle. Doyle also teaches Biology, AP Biology, and Anatomy and Physiology.

Adding this class to the curricula offered to students was Doyle’s idea because she knew it would be a great asset to the class options students have.

“We got a grant and part of the grant was for AP classes. I started researching AP classes to teach and came across AP Psychology. I thought, ‘Lowry could really use Psychology’ and if it can be AP Psychology all the better,” said Doyle.

As I mingled with teachers from other states at the AP Summer Institute, I was amazed at how popular psychology was. Having exposure to a class like that for high school students is always a good thing.”

Junior Breanna Sowinski is one of the students who chose to be in the class.

“I took this class because it was something different and never offered before. When I heard about this class I thought that it was about mental disorders so I was curious,” said Sowinski. “[It has] definitely surpassed [my expectations] because I didn’t know what topics were in psychology.”

There are upcoming topics in the class that have Sowinski intrigued.

“I’m excited to learn about the consciousness unit because sleeping disorders interest me,” said Sowinski.
Doyle emphasized the point of the class and why it is beneficial.

“The beauty of this class is that we’re getting kids to think about why they think the way they do and also to think about why they behave the way they do,” said Doyle. “We have a great group of kids and they’re really interested. Their level of discussions is just gratifying and the fact that it’s AP, allows them to potentially get college credit, so it’s a win-win.”
