For the last couple of years, the Bucks have been a dominant force in girl’s basketball. Each level features a wide variety of players who are all very talented in every aspect of the game. The Freshmen team is no different. This has been a group of players that have been playing together for most of their lives and it definitely shows on the court.
The Bucks are just coming off of a three-game tournament which featured contests with Eureka, Lovelock, and West Wendover. The Bucks won all three games defeating Lovelock, 34-27, and West Wendover, 34-24. The score of the Eureka game was not available.
Juli Garcia is content with the way the season has gone so far and believes the team is a force to be reckoned with.
“It [the season] is going pretty good, we have only lost one game to Fallon. We all get along pretty well and we play really great together. We need to work on talking on the court though,” said Garcia.
Fellow freshman, Hailey Fernandez, agrees with Garcia and thinks the season is headed in the right direction and looks forward to the remainder of it.
“The tournament went pretty well. There’s stuff that we need to work on obviously, but overall we did really good for it being our first tournament,” said Fernandez.
Fernandez went into the specifics of what she believes the team needs to work on but knows the team has great chemistry on the court.
“We need to work on shooting the most, we could work on defense too but definitely shooting. We are really good at just working together, we all are. We never argue, and we always know someone else is telling me something to help me,” said Fernandez.
In the one game the team has lost this season, Fernandez believes nerves were to blame.
“We lost to Fallon by two points. I think we were mainly just nervous for our first game, we didn’t have the best start to that game,” concluded Fernandez.
The team’s next home game will be January 2 and the Bucks will be playing against school rival, Elko.
