With the closing of schools and summer around the corner, one question on a lot of people’s minds is one that we don’t know the answer too. Are they going to continue with opening schools in the fall as well as fall sports? Most fall sports have summer offseason practices and whether the teams are allowed to do them but with guidelines or would they just get canceled.
Tim Connors, the Vice Principal and Athletic Administrator, is waiting for updated guidelines for fall sports and the offseason programs that come with them.
“As of right now, our summer programs are put on hold until we get guidance from the NIAA which is the governing body for high school athletics,” said Connors. “All high schools have to follow the guidelines of the NIAA and once further direction has been given we will proceed”.
The NIAA (Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association) canceled spring sports and all the involvement around them when they canceled school.
“In-person athletic gatherings, such as but not limited to, meetings, film sessions, training sessions, skill development sessions, fundraisers, work projects, practices, scrimmages, competitions, etc.regardless of where they occur, if organized and/or promoted by a school or representative of a school would violate the Directive,” said an NIAA memo.
With time and as the Coronavirus progress gets better the NIAA will modify the measures taken to help prevent the virus from spreading.
“As the response to the pandemic moves forward, these measures may be modified, lifted or eased to coincide with adjustments in guidance from public health officials and/or government orders. It is noted that presently there is no set time or date for the lifting or easing of these,” said NIAA.
NIAA is keeping the restrictions through the spring which is almost over. This might spread till summer which is just around the corner and if these aren’t followed there will be consequences.
“Member schools shall not allow students or coaches at any NIAA member school to use the school’s athletic facilities for a meeting, workout, practice, game or contest in any NIAA sanctioned sport regardless of the affiliation (club or otherwise) of the group seeking to use the facilities,” said NIAA.
