Four teams battled it out rally by rally, but the seniors topped off the win against the juniors in the final match, but fell shortly after to the teacher squad.
The first match was played by the juniors and the freshmen. The freshmen could barely hang with the upperclassmen as they fell 20-7 due to some nasty serves sent over the net by Joe Marley, Omar Guerrero, and Nate Nelson. Mickey Donovan and Brian Shettler were the biggest threats at the net with four kills each.
The second match of the night was between the sophomores and seniors. The first ten points were going point by point, but soon the seniors took the lead and finished them off 20-16. Jacob Hernandez, sophomore attacker, helped his team with some blocks at the net, but it wasn’t quite enough when Christian Gray and Liam Sparks spiked the ball right back at them.
The losers of each game, sophomores and freshmen, played a well-fought battle for third. Travis Hardy finished off the game with three straight aces to help the sophomores win 22-20.
The final match was close, but the seniors got their first high school career he-man title. Jorge Bernal, Guerrero, and Donovan Brumm tried stopping them at the net, but it wasn’t quite enough. Roberto Sanchez, Sparks, and Gray slammed the ball down onto the juniors’ side of the court with Donovan Brumm’s sets. The ending score was 25-17.
The winners played an interesting game against the teachers but lost because they couldn’t quite handle Mrs. Miranda Santos’ serves. The teachers won 25-23, and that brought the annual He-Man competition to an end.
