Advice to the class of 2017

The year your whole class has been waiting for is approaching, and it’s going to hit you like an avalanche coming down a mountain. Even though your last year in high school should be all about fun and doing shenanigans with your friends before you all go your separate ways (word to my homegirl KY); you still have to buckle down and get through this last year.

First and most importantly, make a backup plan in case your first choice of college or work or whatever else you find yourself doing doesn’t work. With that being said, have a plan. Have an idea of where you would like to go to college. Apply to multiple colleges, but don’t have your heart set on one because things could change in a split second.

Even though you have to make decisions that will change your life forever next year, try your best not to stress about things. I know you’re probably thinking to yourself, “Maclyn, you just told me to set out a solid plan for college next year,” but still, go hang out with your friends. Go to all the sports games you can because, after this, you won’t be able to call yourself a Lowry Buckaroo anymore. Go out and experience new things because before you know it, you will run out of free time to try new things.

I know how dumb this sounds, but spend as much time as you can with your senior classmates. You have grown up with these people your whole life and in just a short year, you will all be moving to different places and doing different things.

Be active in senior class activities like senior ditch day, pep assemblies, senior sunrise, and graduation planning. Also, be respectful to your class officers and advisors because it may not seem like it, but they do a lot for your class so you have a perfect graduation, and have enough funds to do so.
Senior year sounds like a lot to handle, and it is, but don’t forget to appreciate the folks who have been there for you your whole life: your family. You might think getting ready to leave for college is going to be stressful for you, but your family is going to be stressed out for you as well. Spend as much time with them as you can. Tell everyone you love them on a regular basis. Actually sit down and have dinner with them on the weekends.

Keep up in all your classes because it would really suck having to stay here for another year because you failed the last semester of government. Do your homework, it really isn’t that much, and an hour a night dedicated to schoolwork won’t kill you. Apply for as many scholarships as you can. Write good quality essays to get more money for school. Take time on all your work.

In conclusion, just have a great senior year because it should be nothing but the best for you. This year is all about you, so make it that way. Good luck class of 2017.
