For her performance over the past weekend in victories of the Dayton Dust Devils and Fernley Vaqueros, freshman Alyssa Jones was chosen as The Brand’s Athlete of the Week.
Jones is the only freshman on the junior varsity basketball team, but said she doesn’t let the nerves get to her. She embraces it because it makes her have to focus more and play harder.
Against Dayton and Fernley, Jones scored ten and seven points, respectively and dished out a number of assists.
“I always try to look to get the ball to my teammates to give them the best opportunity to make a play,” said Jones.
She said an area of focus for her this year is being more vocal and trying to be a leader on the court. Jones also acknowledged that there are improvements to be made, both as an individual and as a team.
With it still being fairly early in the season Jones said, “As a player, I’m trying to get better at seeing the floor and as a team, we focus on defense and just trying to get better every day.”
