Alexus Gomez has pushed through so many challenges through her freshman year all the way to her senior year. Being a three-sport athlete is not something many can do, but Gomez does it with ease.

She participates in softball, volleyball, and basketball. Gomez finds something to love in each sport, however that did not just come from nowhere.

Gomez was inspired to continue sports because she had been playing from such a young age.

“What really inspired me to play sports was playing all three sports from first grade through all my years of school,” said Gomez.

Gomez further explains how her parents played a significant factor in creating her work ethic. Her parents pushed her to be the best she could be in each sport, even if she weren’t that good at it.

With each sport comes a different thing to love. Gomez’s favorite part of basketball is how physical it is and the level of intensity.

“It was a sport I had to be mentally and physically tough in the most,” said Gomez.

Gomez describes volleyball as a very strategic game; when playing, she focused on her first pass to start the pace of every game. Softball can compare in some ways.

“My favorite part about softball is working together as a team on the field and when we battle to beat the other team,” said Gomez. “Softball is a mental game and a team effort.”

Gomez enjoys softball the most out of the three sports she plays.

COVID took Gomez’s basketball season away but regardless, she was grateful for all the open gyms she could participate in. During her volleyball season, Gomez and her team were required to wear masks throughout the game. Currently, in her softball season, she only has to wear her mask in the dugout.

One of the crucial parts of being on a team is practice. Gomez believes that practice makes her a better player by having the chance to look at what she could have done differently.

“Practice also is a place where my teammates and I can get to have fun and get to know each other, which is important to flow like a team,” said Gomez.

Mr. Austin Mayo, her softball coach, mentions many different things about Gomez that make her such a valuable player to have on the field.

“She is willing to put in the extra work and extra effort to account for that, and that’s taken her a long way,” said Mayo.

During practice Gomez works on things she can get better at, Mayo also includes how she does things on the side and on her own to progress her softball skills. She always showed up to practice, is in the weight room, and attended every open gym that was held.

“She is one of our captains this year and she definitely takes on a role where she shows how our program rolls,” said Mayo.

Gomez actively tries to show the younger people on the team the standard Mayo holds for his athletes too and is always trying to help them as well.
