Britain Backus is a Lowry senior with ambition and goals. Throughout her high school years, she has dominated the field, court, and track with her athleticism. She has proven herself through soccer, basketball, and track, and continues to prove herself in other ways, too.
“I will just miss being able to play with my best friends, I’ll miss our endless laughs and unforgettable memories,” said Backus.
As a multi-talented athlete, Backus is rewarded with various playing opportunities on the field and the court. Backus played soccer for all four years of high school. She was offered spots on many college soccer teams but decided to go with basketball.
“On the court, her dedication and skill set her apart, consistently delivering outstanding performances,” said Backus’s basketball coach, Alyssa Jones. “As a teammate, Britain’s unwavering support and leadership create passion and excitement, making her a cornerstone of unity and motivation.
”Backus dedicated much of her skill to basketball, so much so that she is going to play for the University of Nevada, Reno Basketball team. She expresses her feelings about going to Division 1.
“I’m super excited and grateful for the opportunity to play at the next level,” said Backus. “I’m excited to play for my new coaches and alongside my new teammates.”
Backus also enjoys the beach, boating, and snowmobiling. Anything involving the outdoors appeals to her. She also loves to engage in physical activity outside of sports. Running is a good outlet for her.
“She has brought a level of competition to our team that has helped to raise the level and make us better as a team,” said her track coach Tyrell Lucas. “She always shows up with a good attitude and is willing to put in the work required to not only better herself but those around her as well. Britain is someone that you can count on to give it her all. When she commits to something, she gives it her best effort.”
Coach Lucas appreciates and applauds the efforts Backus makes in her track career, although this is the sport she is least known in, she continues to put all her effort into her performance, no matter the level of competition.
“Being Brit’s teammate not only gave me a friend, but also another coach in a way,” said Backus’s teammate, Kepa Hilbish. “She always helped me improve when I was struggling and never let me get down on myself.”
Backus is a competitive person, but she never lets that get in the way of her on-team friendships. She sees her teammates as an opportunity to grow individually to help her team rise above the competition.
Britain Backus has repeatedly shown her skills in soccer, track, and especially basketball. Almost anyone would agree that Backus is an excellent athlete and continues to strive in other areas of her life. She is a good student and friend. Backus hopes to continue her strive in her college career. All these qualities have earned her a spot as Athlete of the Year.
