This year, all the Lowry High staff members chose who they thought deserved the recognition as Staff Member of the Year. This year, Diana Mejia was chosen as the Staff Member of the Year.

“Our staff votes on both the certified, which are teachers, and then the classified, which can be our instructional aides, our paraprofessionals, custodians, and our secretaries,” said principal Shaun Taylor.

Ms. Mejia is an in-house paraprofessional and helps with other things around the school.

“She serves as our in-house paraprofessional right now,” said Taylor. “She handles our tardies here, so she monitors all the students’ tardies for us and handles lunch detention. She also runs in-house for kids and handles assigning Saturday school for us as well. She fills in for our PE department quite frequently if a teacher is out, and she is great with all the kids. So the staff as a whole feels like Ms. Mejia just does an outstanding job.”

Staff member Ms. Nadine Meade says Mejia deserves this award for how nice and respectful she is to everyone.

“My favorite thing about Diana is she keeps it real always, she works very hard for her in-house students to ensure they succeed,” said Meade. “She treated everyone the same, no matter what is going on. She is always positive, kind, and caring always.”

A freshman, Giovanni Leon, feels like Ms. Mejia does a great job at what she does and can be a good person to talk to.

“I like talking to her; she’s very nice and can be fun and easy to talk to,” said Leon. “She’s always there when you need her to talk, and she’s fun to mess around with

Another Freshman, Ixia Hernandez, likes that she’s nice to everyone and makes people feel their best.

“You can tell that she cares about all her kids and she’s really fun to talk to, she’s not a scary person to talk to even if you’ve never talked to her, and you start talking to her she treats you with respect and she’s really nice and friendly,” said Hernandez.

Ms. Mejia enjoys her job and is glad for the recognition she got at Lowry High.

“I feel happy, I enjoy my role at Lowry because students learn accountability and consistency,” said Mejia. “The best part is seeing them appreciate something they didn’t initially find important.”
