The JV boy’s basketball team began their season with a tough loss against Reno but they have won two of their last four games since.
“We started off slow, but we have made many steps forward since the Reno game. The win over Fallon was a big accomplishment but we can’t be satisfied with that, we need to keep on grinding and get some wins,” said sophomore Ren Mattson.
Another sophomore and teammate of Mattson, Riley Sakurada agreed with him saying “Well we’ve had some struggles, but getting a win for our first league game will set the tone for the rest of the season.”
Sakurada believes that the team had “a few bumps in the road, it took us a while to get in the mode.”
On Tuesday, December 10, the JV boys played Churchill County at home and won 44-43 proving that they indeed are now in the mode.
“We put in our best effort and worked hard, but only when it was needed, if we had done it the entire game we wouldn’t have been in the close game situation that we were but the key is effort and hard work,” said Mattson about the effort that was given by the team.
Sakurada agreed with Mattson again, “It was very intense and took a lot of hard work but in the end, we pulled out the W.”
Looking ahead, the team expects to be successful and compete with everyone they play during the rest of the season.
Mattson believes that two of the biggest competitors in the league are “Fallon and Elko, as always, they’re the two league games we want to win.” He also thinks that Reed High, a Division 1 team, will be good, and he would like to see Lowry play well against them.
Sakurada said that as the season progresses, “[We] just to get better and keep the intensity up.” He believes that if they do that, they will continue to be successful throughout the season.
