The Future Business Leaders of America club left for their state conference in Reno on Sunday, April 15. This conference took place at the Nugget Hotel and since there were members who placed for finals, they were able to stay for the remainder of the conference, which concluded on April 18.
The advisor, Mrs. Lisa Scott, addressed the point of the conference and the types of tests presented to the members.
“In the state conference, you basically get to compete to qualify for nationals. There are over 500 kids from the state that go and they compete in everything from word processing to public speaking to business ethics. There is a lot of entrance at finals, and you have to qualify for finals to perform on the second day,” said Scott. “With every event, the top 10 of every event, get called up to the stage and then they receive their awards. The top four in each event qualify to go to Nationals, which will be in Baltimore this year. Tailor West, Josie Warn, and Adaya Goldblatt all qualified for Nationals.”
Scott was sure that the ones who excelled were the ones who focused on what they needed to do; regardless of the immense amount of pressure.
“The kids that did the best, worked the hardest. When we’re here and they’re working on their presentations, I try to give them all the tools to do a good job,” said Scott. “At state, I run around and make sure they know where they’re supposed to be and that they’re pumped and ready to go.”
First-place winner, Josie Warn, shared what is needed to be prepared for the competitions, explicitly and generally.
“For events with production pieces, like Graphic Design or Publication Design, you have to create the required pieces. This year, Graphic Design was required to create a magazine spread for the FBLA-sponsored magazine, ‘Tomorrow’s Business Insider’. For this I had to make a cover, inside article, interview piece, and flyer,” said Warn.
Besides the nonstop preparation and the nerve-wracking moments, Warn is one of the many members who have been influenced by this experience.
“I think the thing that influenced me the most at this conference was our group. We had a really great group this year, lots of fun personalities so it was great to spend time with all of them and to make some great new friends. Everyone is very supportive of each other. Plus, it’s a great opportunity to meet people who are doing similar things,” said Warn.
