You may have seen President Donald Trump say that he intends to buy Greenland on FOX News recently, or a post on X (formerly Twitter) talking about the bill to change Greenland’s name. Donald Trump is the current president, sworn in January of 2025, and he’s already enacted many bills that have cut funding to various government departments and withheld money from refugees. On Truth Social (owned by Trump Social & Technology group) “For purposes of National Security and Freedom throughout the World, the United States of America feels that the ownership and control of Greenland is an absolute necessity,” said Trump.
Anders Vistisen is a Danish politician and a Member of the European Parliament. He is a member of the Danish People’s Party. In the European Parliament on January 21, 2025, Vistisen took to the stand. “Dear President Trump, listen very carefully: Greenland has been part of the Danish kingdom for 800 years,” said Vistisen. “It is an integrated part of our country. It is not for sale.” He was punished by the council because of a comment he made to finish his short statement “Mr. Trump, **** off,” said Vistisen.
Teacher Brett Westmoreland has discussed the possibility of buying Greenland with some of his classes. He has made them debate the possible reasons why President Trump could want the island, including natural resources, land gain, and proximity to Russia, among many other reasons.
“Students should understand that geography is not just the location and names of places, but rather, is at the forefront of modern conflicts, trade, and interactions,” said Westmoreland. “Students should be aware of current events, where they take place, why they happen, how they affect their region and the world, and how complex problems can be addressed.”
Westmoreland believes that talking about relevant current events is beneficial to make students aware of what can affect their lives and those around them.
As more comes out on Trump’s attempt at purchasing the island, more people become maddened by his inability to stand down. An act introduced on February 10, 2025, proposed to officially change the name to “Red, White and Blueland”. H. R.1161 section 3 states, “Any reference in a law, map, regulation, document, paper, or other record of the United States to Greenland shall be deemed to be a reference to ‘Red, White, and Blueland’.”
